Description

Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the most famous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. The Temple stands on the western bank of the holy river Ganga, and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the holiest of Shiva Temples. The main deity is known by the names Shri Vishwanath and Vishweshwara literally meaning Lord of the Universe. Varanasi city was also called Kashi in ancient time, and hence the Temple is popularly called as Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The temple complex consists of a series of smaller shrines, located in a small lane called the Vishwanatha Galli, near the river. The linga of the main deity at the shrine is 60 centimetres (24 in) tall and 90 centimetres (35 in) in circumference housed in a silver altar.The main temple is quadrangle and is surrounded by shrines of other gods. There are small temples for Kaalbhairav, Dhandapani, Avimukteshwara, Vishnu, Vinayaka, Sanishwara, Virupaksha and Virupaksh Gauri in the complex.

काशी विश्वनाथ मंदिर भगवान शिव को समर्पित सबसे प्रसिद्ध हिंदू मंदिरों में से एक है। यह वाराणसी, उत्तर प्रदेश, भारत में स्थित है। मंदिर पवित्र नदी गंगा के पश्चिमी तट पर स्थित है, और शिव मंदिरों के पवित्रतम बारह ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से एक है। मुख्य देवता को श्री विश्वनाथ और विश्वेश्वर के नामों से जाना जाता है जिसका शाब्दिक अर्थ है ब्रह्मांड के स्वामी। वाराणसी शहर को प्राचीन काल में काशी भी कहा जाता था, और इसलिए मंदिर को काशी विश्वनाथ मंदिर के रूप में जाना जाता है। मंदिर परिसर में मंदिरों की एक श्रृंखला है, जो नदी के पास विश्वनाथ गली नामक एक छोटी सी गली में स्थित है। मंदिर में मुख्य देवता का लिंग 60 सेंटीमीटर (24 इंच) लंबा और 90 सेंटीमीटर (35 इंच) परिधि में एक चांदी की वेदी में रखा गया है। मुख्य मंदिर चतुर्भुज है और अन्य देवताओं के मंदिरों से घिरा हुआ है। परिसर में कालभैरव, धंदापानी, अविमुक्तेश्वरा, विष्णु, विनायक, सनिश्वरा, विरुपक्ष और विरुपक्ष गौरी के लिए छोटे मंदिर हैं।

Temple Story

As per the Shiva Purana, once Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu had an argument about who was supreme. To test them, Lord Shiva pierced the three worlds as a huge endless pillar of light, the jyotirlinga to determine who was mightier and asked both Lords to find the end of the pillar. Lord Vishnu took the form of Varaha and sought out the bottom while Lord Brahma took the form of a swan to fly to the pillar's top. Lord Brahma, out of arrogance, lied that he had found out the end, offering a katuki flower as witness. Lord Vishnu modestly confessed that he was unable to find the bottom. Lord Shiva then took the form of the wrathful Bhairava, chopped off Lord Brahma's lying fifth head, and cursed Lord Brahma that he would not be worshipped. Lord Vishnu for his honesty would be worshiped at par with Lord Shiva for all eternity. The jyotirlinga(jyoti means light/radiance and linga is lingam) is an ancient axis mundi symbol representing the supreme formless (nirguna) reality at the core of creation, out of which the form (saguna) of Shiva appears. The jyothirlinga shrinesare places where Lord Shiva appeared as a fiery column of light. Each of the twelve jyotirlinga sites took the name of the presiding deity - each considered different manifestation of Lord Shiva. At all these sites, the primary image is lingam representing the beginningless and endless Stambha pillar, symbolizing the infinite nature of Lord Shiva and the universe.

शिव पुराण के अनुसार, एक बार भगवान ब्रह्मा और भगवान विष्णु के बीच एक तर्क हुआ कि कौन सर्वोच्च है। उनका परीक्षण करने के लिए, भगवान शिव ने ज्योति के एक विशाल अनंत स्तंभ के रूप में तीनों लोकों को भेद दिया। भगवान शिव ने कहा जो भी इस स्तम्भ का अंत पहले ढूंढेगा, वह सबसे शक्तिशाली होगा। भगवान विष्णु ने वराह का रूप धारण किया और नीचे की ओर खोज की, जबकि भगवान ब्रह्मा ने स्तंभ के शीर्ष पर उड़ान भरने के लिए हंस का रूप धारण किया। अहंकार में चूर, भगवान ब्रह्मा ने झूठ बोला कि उन्होंने अंत का पता लगा लिया है। भगवान विष्णु ने विनम्रतापूर्वक अंत खोजने में असमर्थ होने की बात कबूल की। तब भगवान शिव ने क्रोधी भैरव का रूप धारण किया, अथवा भगवान ब्रह्मा के पांचवें सिर को काट दिया, और भगवान ब्रह्मा को शाप दिया कि उनकी पूजा नहीं की जाएगी। ईमानदारी के लिए भगवान विष्णु को वरदान दिया कि अनंत काल के लिए उन्हें भगवान शिव के समान पूजा जाएगा। ज्योतिर्लिंग एक प्राचीन प्रतीक है जो सृष्टि के मूल में सर्वोच्च निराकार (निर्गुण) वास्तविकता का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है, जिसमें से भगवान शिव का रूप (सगुण) प्रकट हुआ है। ज्योतिर्लिंग मंदिर में भगवान शिव प्रकाश के एक उग्र स्तंभ के रूप में प्रकट हुए हैं। बारह ज्योतिर्लिंग स्थलों में से प्रत्येक में पीठासीन देवता का नाम लिया गया है ,प्रत्येक को भगवान शिव का अलग-अलग स्वरूप माना जाता है।
