Description

The Baijnath temple has been continuously under worship ever since its construction in 1204 A.D. by two local merchants named Ahuka and Manyuka. The two long inscriptions in the porch of the temple indicate that a temple of Lord Shiva existed on the spot even before the present one was constructed. The present temple is a beautiful example of the early medieval north Indian temple architecture known as Nagara style of temples. The Svayambhu form of Shivalinga is enshrined in the sanctum of the temple that has five projections on each side and is surmounted with a tall curvilinear Shikhara. The entrance to sanctum is through a vestibule that has a large square Mandapa. There is a small porch in front of the mandapa hall that rests on four pillars in the front preceded by an idol of Nandi, the bull, in a small pillared shrine.

बैजनाथ मंदिर वर्ष 1204 में निर्माण के बाद लगातार पूजा का केंद्र रहा है।मंदिर के द्वारमण्डप में दो लंबे शिलालेखों से संकेत मिलता है कि वर्तमान में निर्माण से पहले ही भगवान शिव का एक मंदिर मौजूद था। वर्तमान मंदिर प्रारंभिक मध्यकालीन उत्तर भारतीय मंदिर की वास्तुकला का एक सुंदर उदाहरण है, तथा इस वास्तुकला को मंदिरों की नागरा शैली के रूप में जाना जाता है। मंदिर के गर्भगृह में शिवलिंग का स्वयंभू रूप विराजित है। गर्भगृह का प्रवेश द्वार एक वेस्टिबुल के माध्यम से है जिसमें एक बड़ा मंडप है। यहाँ पर एक छोटे मंदिर में नंदी बैल की मूर्ति भी उपस्तिथ है।

Temple Story

According to Hindu Mythology, Ravana, the demon worshipped Lord Shiva in the Himalayas and to please Lord Shiva, Ravan offered his heads in the fire. Lord Shiva got pleased and blessed Ravana with a wish. Ravana, the great demon wanted to be invincible and immortal and asked Lord Shiva to accompany him to Lanka. Lord Shiva granted Ravana his wish and became Linga and asked Ravana to carry him. Shiva also said that he should not keep the Linga on the ground during his journey to Lanka. However, on the way, Ravana had to answer nature's call so he handed over the Linga to one shepherd who could not hold it for long and kept Linga on the ground. Hence, the Shiva Linga was established here in Baijnath. Since it was Ravana who brought Shiva Linga to Baijnath, the people here do not burn effigy of Ravana during Dussehra festival.

हिंदू पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार, रावण ने हिमालय में भगवान शिव की पूजा की और उन्हें प्रसन्न करने के लिए रावण ने हवन की आग में अपने सिर अर्पित किये। भगवान शिव ने प्रसन्न होकर रावण से इच्छा पूछी। रावण अजेय और अमर होना चाहता था और उसने भगवान शिव को लंका तक साथ जाने के लिए कहा। भगवान शिव इसके लिए सहमत हो गए और लिंग बन गए और रावण को उस लिंग को ले जाने के लिए कहा। भगवान शिव ने यह भी कहा कि रावण को अपनी लंका यात्रा के दौरान लिंग को जमीन पर नहीं रखना । हालाँकि रास्ते में रावण को प्रकृति की पुकार का जवाब देना था, इसलिए उसने लिंग को एक चरवाहे को सौंप दिया, जो इसे लंबे समय तक पकड़ नहीं सका और इसे जमीन पर रखा दिया। इस शिव लिंग की स्थापना बैजनाथ में की गई। चूंकि यह रावण था जो शिव लिंग को बैजनाथ ले आया था, यहां के लोग दशहरा उत्सव के दौरान रावण का पुतला नहीं जलाते हैं।
