Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Sri Manjunatha Swamy Temple, the land of righteousness and piety, is one of south India’s most popular religious pilgrimage centres with a history as old as 800 years. It is located on the banks of river Nethravathi, in the village of Dharmasthala, in Belthangady Taluk of South Kanara district about 75 kms from Mangalore. Dharmasthala”, the abode of dharma, is the quintessence of humanity and faith. In Dharmasthala, charity is a way of life which is extended to all without any discrimination. The temple is regarded as unique since it belongs to the Shaivite sect of Hinduism. The priests are Shivalli Brahmins who belong to the Vaishnava sect of Hinduism and the administration is run by a Jain family called the Pergades. The deities of the temple are Shiva who is referred to as Manjunatha, Ammanavaru, Chandranath and the Dharma Daivas (guardian spirits of Dharma) namely Kalarahu, Kalarkayi, Kumaraswamy and Kanyakumari.

श्रीक्षेत्र धर्मस्थल श्री मंजुनाथ स्वामी मंदिर, धार्मिकता और पवित्रता की भूमि, दक्षिण भारत के सबसे लोकप्रिय धार्मिक तीर्थस्थलों में से एक है, और इस मंदिर का इतिहास 800 साल पुराना है। यह मंदिर दक्षिण कनारा जिले के बेल्थांगडी तालुका में, मंगलौर से लगभग 75 किलोमीटर दूर, धर्मस्थल गाँव में, नथ्रावथी नदी के तट पर स्थित है। मंदिर को अद्वितीय माना जाता है क्योंकि यह हिंदू धर्म के शैव संप्रदाय से संबंधित है। पुजारी ब्राह्मण हैं जो हिंदू धर्म के वैष्णव संप्रदाय से ताल्लुक रखते हैं और प्रशासन एक जैन परिवार द्वारा संचालित किया जाता है। मंदिर के इष्टदेवता भगवान शिव हैं जिन्हें मंजुनाथ, अम्मानवरु, चंद्रनाथ और धर्म दैव (धर्म की संरक्षक आत्मा) अर्थात् कालराहु, कुमारस्वामी और कन्याकुमारी के रूप में भी जाना जाता है।

Temple Story

According to the Legend, 800 years ago, Dharmasthala was known as Kuduma in Mallarmadi, then a village in Belthangady. There lived the Jain Bunt chieftain Birmanna Pergade and his wife Ammu Ballalthi in a house called Nelliadi Beedu. Legend says that the guardian angels of Dharma assumed human forms and arrived at Pergades abode in search of a place where Dharma was being practised and could be continued and propagated. As was their habit, the couple hosted these illustrious visitors with all their wherewithal and great respect. Pleased by their sincerity and generosity, that night the Dharma Daivas appeared in the dreams of Pergade. They explained the purpose of their visit to him and instructed him to vacate his house for the worship of the Daivas and dedicate his life to the propagation of Dharma. Asking no questions, the Pergade built himself another house and began worshiping the Daivas at Nelliadi Beedu.

किंवदंती के अनुसार, 800 साल पहले, धर्मस्थल को मल्लामर्दी में कुदुमा के रूप में जाना जाता था, जो बेलथांगडी में एक गांव था। जैन धर्म के अनुयायी बिरमाना पर्गड़े और उनकी पत्नी अम्मू बल्लंती हुआ करते थे, जो नेलियाडी पिडू नामक एक घर में रहते थे। किंवदंती के अनुसार, धर्म के संरक्षक स्वर्ग के दूतों ने मानव रूप को ग्रहण किया और एक ऐसी जगह की तलाश में धरती पर पहुंचे, जहां धर्म का अभ्यास किया जा रहा था । जैसा कि उनकी आदत थी, दंपति ने इन स्वर्ग के दूतों को पूरे उत्साह और बहुत सम्मान के साथ अपने घर में शरण दी। उनकी ईमानदारी और उदारता से प्रसन्न होकर, उस रात उनके सपनों में भगवान ने दर्शन दिया। उन्होंने उन्हें अपनी यात्रा के उद्देश्य के बारे में बताया और उन्हें निर्देश दिया कि भगवान् शिव की पूजा के लिए अपना घर खाली करें और अपना जीवन धर्म के प्रचार के लिए समर्पित करें। कोई सवाल नहीं पूछते हुए, उस जैन परिवार ने खुद एक और घर बना लिया और अपने पुराने घर में भगवान शिव की पूजा शुरू कर दी।
