Description

The Somnath temple, located in Prabhas Patan near Junagadh in Saurashtra on the western coast of Gujarat, is believed to be the first among the twelve jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva. It is an important pilgrimage and tourist spot in India. Reconstructed several times in the past after repeated destruction by several Muslim invaders and rulers, the present temple was reconstructed in Chaulukya style of Hindu temple architecture and completed in May 1951. The reconstruction was started under the orders of the Home Minister of India Vallabhbhai Patel and completed after his death.

गुजरात के पश्चिमी तट पर सौराष्ट्र में जूनागढ़ के पास प्रभास पाटन में स्थित सोमनाथ मंदिर, शिव के बारह ज्योतिर्लिंग मंदिरों में से पहला माना जाता है। यह गुजरात का एक महत्वपूर्ण तीर्थ और पर्यटन स्थल है। कई मुस्लिम आक्रमणकारियों और शासकों द्वारा बार-बार विनाश के बाद मंदिर का कई बार पुनर्निर्माण किया गया था। वर्तमान मंदिर का हिंदू मंदिर वास्तुकला की चालुक्य शैली में पुनर्निर्माण किया गया और मई 1951 में पूरा किया गया। भारत के गृह मंत्री वल्लभभाई पटेल के आदेश के तहत पुनर्निर्माण शुरू किया गया था अथवा उनकी मृत्यु के बाद पूरा हुआ।

Temple Story

The site of Somnath has been a pilgrimage site from ancient times on account of being a triveni sangam (the confluence of three rivers: Kapila, Hiran and the mythical Saraswati). Soma, the Moon God, is believed to have lost his lustre due to a curse, and the Lord bathed in the Saraswati River at this site to regain it. The name of the town Prabhas means lustre, as well as the alternative names Someshvar and Somnath means the Lord of the Moon. According to popular tradition documented by J. Gordon Melton, the first Shiva temple at Somnath is believed to have been built at some unknown time in the past. The second temple is said to have been built at the same site by the Yadava kings of Vallabhi around 649 CE. In 725 CE, Al-Junayd, the Arab governor of Sindh is said to have destroyed the second temple as part of his invasions of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The Gurjara-Pratihara king Nagabhata II is said to have constructed the third temple in 815 CE, a large structure of red sandstone. After this, the temple had been destroyed several times by Muslim invaders but have always been restored to its glorious past.

त्रिवेणी संगम (तीन नदियों का संगम: कपिला, हिरन और पौराणिक सरस्वती) होने के कारण सोमनाथ प्राचीन काल से एक महत्वपूर्ण तीर्थ स्थल रहा है। माना जाता है कि चंद्रमा देवता सोम को श्राप के कारण अपनी चमक खोनी पड़ी थी और उन्होंने इसे पुनः प्राप्त करने के लिए इस स्थल पर सरस्वती नदी में स्नान किया। शहर का नाम प्रभास है, जिसका अर्थ है चमक, साथ ही वैकल्पिक नाम सोमेश्वर और सोमनाथ है, जिसका अर्थ है चंद्र देव। किवंदति के अनुसार, सोमनाथ में पहला शिव मंदिर अतीत में किसी अज्ञात समय में बनाया गया था। कहा जाता है कि दूसरा मंदिर वर्ष 649 के आसपास वल्लभी के यादव राजाओं द्वारा उसी स्थान पर बनाया गया था। वर्ष 725 में अल-जुनैद, सिंध के अरब गवर्नर ने गुजरात और राजस्थान के अपने आक्रमणों के तहत दूसरे मंदिर को नष्ट कर दिया। कहा जाता है कि राजा नागभट्ट द्वितीय ने वर्ष 815 में तीसरे मंदिर का निर्माण किया था, जो लाल बलुआ पत्थर की एक बड़ी संरचना है। इसके पश्चात, मुस्लिम आक्रमणकारियों द्वारा मंदिर को कई बार नष्ट कर दिया गया था लेकिन हमेशा इस मंदिर का पुनर्निर्माण लगन तथा सुन्दरता से हुआ।
