Description

The Nagvasuki temple is located on the banks of the Ganges at the northern end of the Daraganj locality. Nagvasuki Dev is worshiped in this temple and his stone idol is placed in the centre of the temple. Nagvasuki has also been called Sheshraj, Sarpanath, Anant and Sarvadhyaksha. The glory of this temple can only be gauged from the fact that the journey of every devotee and pilgrim to Prayagraj is not complete until he or she sees Lord Nagvasuki. Lakhs of pilgrims visit the temple on the day of Kumbh, Ardh Kumbh, Magh Mela and Nagpanchami. The description of this temple also appears in the Puranas. The Bhogavati shrine is believed to be inhabited with Nagavasuki. The Nagvasuki temple is considered to be the Bhogavati shrine on the west side of the Ganges towards the east.When the Ganges floods during the rainy days, its water reaches the stairs of the Nagvasuki temple. The devotees then bathe in the Bhogavati shrine. In Shravan month, the ritual of peace ie. Rudrabhishek, Mahabhisheka and Kaal Sarpdosh takes place in the Nagvasuki Temple.

दारागंज इलाके के उत्तरी छोर पर गंगा के किनारे नागवासुकी मंदिर स्थित है। इस मंदिर में नागवासुकी देव की पूजा की जाती है और उनकी पत्थर की मूर्ति को मंदिर के केंद्र में रखा गया है। नागवासुकी को शेषराज, सरपनाथ, अनंत भी कहा जाता है। इस मंदिर की महिमा का अंदाजा केवल इस बात से लगाया जा सकता है कि प्रयागराज में आने वाले हर भक्त और तीर्थयात्री की यात्रा तब तक पूरी नहीं होती, जब तक वह भगवान नागवासुकी के दर्शन नहीं करता। कुंभ, अर्ध कुंभ, माघ मेला और नागपंचमी के दिन लाखों श्रद्धालु मंदिर आते हैं। इस मंदिर का वर्णन पुराणों में भी है। जब बारिश के दिनों में गंगा बाढ़ आती है, तो इसका पानी नागवासुकी मंदिर की सीढ़ियों तक पहुँच जाता है। भक्त तब भोगवती मंदिर में स्नान करते हैं। श्रावण मास में नागवासुकी मंदिर में रुद्राभिषेक, महाभिषेक और काल सर्पदोष की पूजा होती है।

Temple Story

What is famous about this temple is that when Aurangzeb was breaking the temples in India, he himself came to break the much-talked Nagvasuki temple. But, as soon as he shot a sword at the idol, the sword got stuck at the idol and suddenly the divine form of Lord Nagvasuki was revealed. Aurangzeb trembled at seeing his formidable appearance and fainted in fear. The temple also has many mythological beliefs. There is such a mythological belief about this temple that by coming here and worshiping, Kaal Sarp Dosh ends forever. Legend says that the then Maratha king had developed leprosy at that time. So Raj Pandit had agreed that if the king would get rid of the disease, he would renovate the temple.The king got rid of the dangerous disease. Grateful Raj Pandit built the pucca ghat along with the temple.

इस मंदिर के बारे में यह कहानी प्रसिद्ध है कि जब औरंगज़ेब भारत में मंदिरों को तोड़ रहा था, तो वह स्वयं नागवासुकी मंदिर को तोड़ने आया था। लेकिन, जैसे ही उसने मूर्ति पर तलवार चलाई, तलवार मूर्ति पर अटक गई और अचानक भगवान नागवासुकी दिव्य रूप में प्रकट हुए। औरंगज़ेब उस उग्र रूप को देखकर कांप गया और भय में बेहोश हो गया। मंदिर की कई पौराणिक मान्यताएं भी हैं। इस मंदिर के बारे में ऐसी पौराणिक मान्यता है कि यहां आकर पूजा करने से काल सर्प दोष हमेशा के लिए खत्म हो जाता है। किंवदंती के अनुसार तत्कालीन मराठा राजा कुष्ठ रोग से पीड़ित हो गए। इसलिए राज पंडित इस बात पर सहमत थे कि यदि राजा को बीमारी से छुटकारा मिल जाएगा, तो वे मंदिर का जीर्णोद्धार करेंगे। राजा को खतरनाक बीमारी से छुटकारा मिल गया। कृतज्ञ राज पंडित ने मंदिर के साथ पक्के घाट का निर्माण कराया।
