Description

The Chamunda Devi Temple in Himachal Pradesh is located 10 km west of Palampur in the Kangra area of the state. It stands on the banks of the famous Ban Ganga River. The temple is housed with extremely sacred idol of Chamunda Devi, and as such the idol is wrapped by a red cloth. The location of this sacred temple is also significant since it is believed to be the same spot where the Mata or the Maa Kali assassinated the demon kings Shumbh and Nisumbh. The two generals were namely Chanda and Munda. It is their name that gave Goddess Kali, a new name called Chamunda.

चामुंडा देवी मंदिर हिमाचल प्रदेश राज्य के कांगड़ा क्षेत्र में पालमपुर से 10 किमी पश्चिम में स्थित है। यह मंदिर प्रसिद्ध बान गंगा नदी के तट पर स्थित है। मंदिर मे चामुंडा देवी की अत्यंत पवित्र मूर्ति है, और इस मूर्ति को लाल कपड़े से लपेटा जाता है। इस पवित्र मंदिर का स्थान भी महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि माना जाता है कि यह वही स्थान है जहाँ माता या माँ काली ने राक्षस राजा शुम्भ और निशुम्भ की हत्या की थी। दो सेनापति थे चंदा और मुंडा। इसी कारण से देवी काली को चामुंडा भी कहा जाता है।

Temple Story

The mythology of Maa Chamunda Devi has been chronicled in "Durga Sapta-Shati'. The story goes like this: The two great demons namely the Chand and Mund led a huge army with weaponary on being ordered by their king 'Shumb' and 'Ni-Shumb'. Both saw goddess sitting on a peak of Himalaya and the goddess was smiling, as the goddess was unarmed, the two demons tried to catch hold of her. Then the whole army took up their arms and encircled goddess. The goddess got enraged and furious and it seems that her whole body became black with anger and eyebrows raised on forehead. Then with the Maa Amba's austerity, 'Kali-Devi' appeared with a sword in her hand and roared violently. Maa Kali was covered with a garland of human heads which was gracing her neck and while the body was covered by tiger-skin. Maa Kali's skin looked dry and her shape ferocious. And the most important expression was that she had eyes drawn deep and mouth wide open and tongue brandishing violently. Temple is located at the place where the two great demons 'Chand' and 'Mund' came to fight with goddess, while goddess appeared in the form of Kali and killed both the demons.

माँ चामुंडा देवी की पौराणिक कथा "दुर्गा सप्त-शती" में अंकित की गई है। कहानी कुछ इस प्रकार है- दो महान राक्षसों चंद और मुंड ने अपने राजा शुम्ब और नीशुम्ब के आदेश पर शस्त्रागार के साथ एक विशाल सेना का नेतृत्व किया। दोनों ने देवी को हिमालय के शिखर पर बैठे हुए देखा और देवी मुस्कुरा रही थीं, क्योंकि देवी निहत्थी थीं, दोनों राक्षसों ने उन्हें पकड़ने की कोशिश की। तब पूरी सेना ने उनकी बाहों को पकड़ लिया और देवी को घेर लिया। देवी का स्वभाव क्रोधित और उग्र हो गया और ऐसा लगने लगा कि उनका पूरा शरीर क्रोध से काला पड़ गया। फिर तुरंत मा अम्बा की तपस्या के साथ, 'काली-देवी' प्रकट हुई और हिंसक रूप धारण किया। मानव सिर की माला उनकी गर्दन पर थी और शरीर को बाघ की खाल से ढका हुआ था। माँ काली की त्वचा सूखी दिख रही थी और उनकी आकृति खूँखार थी। ये वही मंदिर है जहां दो महान राक्षस 'चंद' और 'मुंड' देवी के साथ लड़ने के लिए आये थे, जबकि देवी काली के रूप में प्रकट हुईं और दोनों राक्षसों को मार डाला।
